We are Colorado's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Denver raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Denver pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
- If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
- Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
- When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation
Denver Raccoon Control Tip: Common Diseases Carried By Raccoons
Raccoons are a species that is found in most parts of North America, and it has adapted well to the growing urbanization of the region, being able to survive in both rural and urban areas. The fact that the raccoon is able to live alongside people without too much difficulty does pose risks for us as people, as they can carry a range of zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted to people and their pets. While some of these are relatively innocuous, some of the diseases can leave serious and long lasting effects to the people that contract the conditions.
Rabies
Probably the most well-known of the diseases carried by raccoons, rabies is potentially fatal and although treatments are now available, these are not always effective. Rabies is transmitted by a bite from the raccoon, and symptoms can include unusual aggression, foaming at the mouth, an aversion to water and fatigue.
Raccoon Roundworm
Roundworm is a parasite that is present in many raccoons, and while it lives in the animal's intestines it will then lay its eggs which escape from the raccoon's body through the feces. These eggs can then become airborne if the feces is disturbed, meaning they can be inhaled by people, or are often transmitted to pets that lick the animal's feces. Although rare in people, symptoms can include damage to the eyes and neurological problems.
Leptospirosis
Another disease that is transmitted through the feces and urine of raccoons is Leptospirosis, which is a bacterial condition that is sometimes caught by those cleaning a raccoon latrine or nest. Symptoms of this disease begin at the milder end with aches, headaches and fever symptoms, while more serious case can lead to meningitis, kidney failure and can be lethal in some cases.

SalmonellaOften associated with food poisoning, this bacteria is also commonly found in raccoons and can also be transmitted to people and pets through urine or feces. The symptoms for salmonella include an upset stomach, diarrhea and vomiting, and while it isn't usually too serious for most healthy people, even this bacteria can prove to be fatal for some people with a diminished immune system.
Canine Distemper
As the name suggests, this is a disease that would usually affect pets that have come into contact with raccoons, and is again transmitted through bodily fluids. While puppies are the most vulnerable to the disease, it can also affect adult dogs, with symptoms in dogs including diarrhea and vomiting, a runny nose and coughing. This can be fatal in some cases, or may lead to long term neurological damage.
Tularemia
Although not as easy to catch as some other diseases, Tularemia can be transmitted through ticks, fleas or direct contact with raccoons. Fevers and ulcers are among the common symptoms, but more serious cases can lead to pneumonia.
Precautions To Help Keep Yourself Safe When Dealing With Raccoons
When it comes to keeping yourself safe from the diseases carried by raccoons and their parasites, there are simple precautions that you can take that can minimize your risk of contracting any of these conditions. The first step is to protect your mouth and eyes when cleaning a raccoon latrine, or carrying out repairs after a raccoon infestation, so wearing plastic goggles and a mask over your mouth is a wise precaution in this instance. The other step is to cover up as much as possible when carrying out this work, so wearing long-sleeved clothing and thick gloves will also help to reduce the chances of you catching any of the diseases that can be carried by raccoons.
